The Calf Housing for Health and Welfare grant will be opening later this summer. This grant can be used to build new, upgrade, or replace existing calf housing buildings to deliver health and welfare benefits for your calves.
The grant is available to farmers in England with a minimum of 11 cattle, the land must either be owned or have a tenancy agreement in place with at least 5 years to run after the project is completed.
The application process is a 3-stage application and is competitive, the application will be scored against the funding priorities as listed above. Your vet must provide you with a letter of support and confirmation that these priorities will be met, this can be fully funded by the Animal Health and Welfare Review which is available through DEFRA.
The grant provides 40% contribution towards the eligible cost of the project, with a minimum of £15,000 and a maximum of £500,000. If solar PV is to be included, they will only contribute 25% towards the purchase and installation towards the eligible cost of this, although it should be noted the building needs to be constructed to be capable of having solar PV on the roof. The remaining 60% can be funded in any way, although other public money or capital grants cannot be used for this purpose.
